FRISCO, Texas (Oct. 7, 2024) – A busy weekend for the USYS National League included lots of game action in Mississippi and Tennessee, where more than 80 matches in the Mid South Conference saw teams take big steps toward capturing division titles.
Among the many influential games in the Premier 1 divisions, a handful included the top two teams in the standings competing for a chance to take firm control of the title race. The first-place finishers in the Premier 1 divisions of the Mid South Conference will secure berths to the 2025 USYS Southern Regional Championships, as well as automatic qualification for the next season’s USYS National League Quarterfinals.
One of the top-of-the-table matchups came in the 14U Boys age group, where Chattanooga FC 11B Navy needed to come from behind to win a 10-goal thriller in a game that the team had on its radar throughout the fall.
“The boys knew all season that this would be an important matchup to be No. 1 in the Mid South this season,” Chattanooga FC coach Dalton Healy said. “They were excited to play in this rematch before heading to the Quarterfinals in Phoenix this December. The parents were thrilled that the boys kept playing hard, even from behind, and that all of their training paid off. We all knew winning this match would lead to securing the No. 1 spot.”
Recap some of the key matches from the weekend:
14U Boys: Chattanooga FC 11B Navy (TN) 6-4 IFC 11B Premier (MS)
This match didn’t lack for goals or drama, as Chattanooga FC prevailed in a back-and-forth encounter on Saturday. After a scoreless opening 15 minutes, IFC’s Xavian Owens and Joseph Ketchum opened the flood gates by finding the back of the net to put the Mississippi side up 2-0. Zane Shaffer replied for Chattanooga by netting a brace to tie the game at 2-2 after 30 minutes. That score line lasted just one minute before Joshua Marchant scored to put IFC back in front, 3-2, in the closing minutes of the half.
Shortly after halftime, Austin Bradley pulled Chattanooga level once again, and Sammy Jimenez Renteria’s 47th-minute strike gave the Tennessee side its first lead of the game. However, Marchant scored his second of the day a few minutes later to tie the game at 4-4.
Bradley became the third player to record a brace, as his second tally gave Chattanooga a 5-4 lead in the 54th minute, and Byron Bernabe added an insurance goal in the 61st minute to seal the thrilling 6-4 win. The victory, combined with the weekend’s other results, helped Chattanooga secure a first-place finish in the 14U Boys Premier 1 division.
15U Boys: New Orleans DFC 10B (LA) 1-2 IFC 10B Premier (MS)
After conceding early, IFC fought back and scored two late goals to capture a 2-1 victory against New Orleans DFC on Saturday. The head-to-head win in the matchup of unbeatens allowed IFC to clinch a first-place finish in the 15U Boys Premier 1 division.
New Orleans came out on the front foot and took a 1-0 lead in just the second minute when Gilbert Urbina found the back of the net. That goal stood for more than an hour of game time, as New Orleans maintained a lead in both the match and the division standings.
However, Bryson Sistrunk pulled IFC level with a 65th-minute goal to set up a tense finish. The tension turned to excitement for IFC, as Jonathan Foster Batson netted a game winner in the final minutes of regulation to give IFC a crucial victory in the top-of-the-table clash.
16U Girls: Kononia Lady Fire 09/10G (TN) 0-1 MSC Lakers Elite 09G (LA)
MSC continued its unblemished start to its National League season by securing a 1-0 win against Kononia Lady Fire on Saturday. Greta Raymond supplied the game’s lone goal, as her strike gave MSC the victory to remain on top of the 16U Girls Premier 1 division standings.
MSC has yet to concede a goal, as each of its opening three wins have come in shutout fashion. There is still plenty of soccer to be played, but the Louisiana side has positioned itself well to contend for the division title with its fast start to the season.
“It is imperative to get results early on in Mid South league play,” said MSC coach Tony Judice. “The competition is so good that we don’t want to put our fate in the opponents’ hands. The team’s goal is to win Regionals and play at the National Championships. If we win Mid South, that’s one step closer to our dream.”
17U Boys: TUSC 08B (TN) 2-4 Pateadores SC Nashville 08B Blue (TN)
Pateadores clinched a first-place finish in the 17U Boys Premier 1 division thanks to two wins over the weekend, highlighted by a vital 4-2 victory against second-place TUSC on Saturday.
Both sides entered the match having won every prior contest, so the stage was set for a hugely influential 90 minutes in the title race. Pateadores needed just three minutes to grab a lead behind a Jac Canepari goal, but TUSC’s Miguel Fuentes equalized in the ninth minute. The frantic opening continued when Nathan Krall scored in the 13th minute to put Pateadores back in front.
After the scoring calmed down, Brendan Medina extended Pateadores’ lead to 3-1 with a goal early in the second half. Krall added some insurance with his second goal of the game before Jaxon Wayland pulled a goal back for TUSC in the 85th minute. That’s as close as the score got, as Pateadores outlasted their in-state foe to take all three points — sending Pateadores on their way to securing the division title.
19U Boys: BRSC 07/06B Black (LA) 1-3 NUSA 07B Maroon (TN)
NUSA moved to the top of the table in the 19U Boys Premier 1 division with a 3-1 win on Sunday against previous group leader BRSC. Johnny Molina opened the scoring in the 25th minute, as he put NUSA in front. Thang Piang doubled the advantage with a 30th-minute strike before Marcus Couhig pulled a goal back for BRSC shortly before the break.
NUSA remained organized in defense throughout the second half, and a 72nd-minute insurance goal from Piang helped to secure the 3-1 win that helped the Tennessee side move to 5-0-0 on the season.
